Politics in rainforest countries
Political developments in rainforest countries have a major influence on the way rainforest areas are managed. The example of the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro shows this dramatically. As one of his first official acts, he signalled that rainforest protection is a hindrance to the country's economic development.
Immediately, an increased deforestation rate of rainforest areas in Brazil became apparent. It is therefore of enormous importance to observe the political developments in rainforest countries and to influence them with political campaigns.
What about Switzerland?
Swiss policy scarcely addresses the topic of tropical forests and their importance for biodiversity, climate change and indigenous peoples. Although Switzerland, with its high consumption of resources, has the potential to greatly influence the conservation of rainforests, it has in the past further reduced its commitment to the protection of the tropical rainforests.
Global cooperation
The trade and value chains of rainforest products are an extremely complex worldwide network. Therefore, global rules are required if we want to protect rainforests in the long term. So far, the conservation and use of rainforests have not become subject of a separate binding international agreement. However, regulations relating to forests can be found in various environmental or international agreements and organisations with other focal points. The most important current international negotiations on forest conservation are taking place within the framework of Climate Protection and the Biodiversity Convention.
Our activities on a political level
In addition to on site projects and raising awareness in Switzerland, GREEN BOOTS is also committed to the preservation of the tropical rainforests at the political level.
- GREEN BOOTS follows political developments in rainforest countries and reports them. If action is needed, GREEN BOOTS supports partner organizations through petitions and other effective instruments.
- GREEN BOOTS is committed to ensuring that Switzerland assumes its responsibility to protect the rainforests. We bring our demands into the political debate by means of direct talks with the responsible authorities and political initiatives.
- GREEN BOOTS monitors and reports on the negotiations of international agreements relating to the rainforest.
